Parents, grandparents, friends, what if you could enjoy a night out and help the Children's Department at the same time? You can by joining us on Thursday, April 29th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Lodge at Wald Park for PALS on the Porch. Enjoy jazz, wine, hors d'oeuvres, and dessert provided by Johnny Bruscos, Cafe Iz, International Wines, and Ashley Mac's.

And that's not all. You'll also have the opportunity to bid on items from your favorite local establishments, including gift certificates, a beach getaway, tickets to local sporting events, handbags, artwork, even a mountain bike and Stihl String Trimmer.
Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased by clicking on the Donate button above.  You'll receive a bid number on your ticket at the door and must have cash or check to purchase bid items.

PALS Fundraising Opportunity

Calling all members!  PALS needs you to volunteer your time in a fantastic fundraising opportunity.  We will be a participating organization in Belk's Charity Day Sale.  The big day is Saturday, May 1st from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m., but opportunities to volunteer abound prior to that Saturday.

First, we need people who are willing to sell tickets to the event.  The cost of tickets is $5.00, and PALS will be able to keep the entire cost of the ticket.  We can't sell tickets at the library circulation desk, but we will be allowed to set up a table in the library for selling tickets, and we need volunteers for that.  If you can spend even just an hour selling tickets in the library for the event, please email Taylor Hill at mohsmom@gmail.com.  Also, if you attend a Wednesday or Thursday story time and don't mind announcing the event or selling tickets, please let Taylor know that, as well.

Finally, we need volunteers to work at Belk the morning of the sale, where we will receive a portion of the ticket sales
from that day.  This is a wonderful opportunity for PALS to raise money for the Children's Department, and we truly need all members' help to make this a success.  Please consider volunteering your time.

PALS February Meeting Recap

A big announcement was made at PALS' first business meeting of the year.  Members, who had gathered to sign up for committees and make plans for Imagination Celebration, received a surprise announcement about this year's venue for the kick-off event to Summer Reading.  Imagination Celebration will be held May 16th at the Wald Park swimming pool, really bringing this year's theme, "Make a Splash, Read," to life.

The PALS members also decided on dates for other spring fundraisers, including a Silent Auction to be held at the Lodge at Wald Park on April 29th.   One key to making Imagination Celebration and the Silent Auction successful fundraisers for PALS and the Children's Department is having members call on local businesses to partner with us in helping to fund this exciting event.  Please remember the deadline for all donations for Imagination Celebration is March 30th.

Transforming the Wald Park pool into a fun-filled beach party that will carry over into an exciting season of Summer Reading will certainly require all hands on deck, so if you haven't signed up for a committee, please do so.  And stay tuned for dates for a March social gathering.

Santa's Workshop Highlights

Picture
Santa's Workshop on Tuesday, Dec. 1, was a fun time. Santa listened as the little ones whispered their wishes and the kids made some beautiful ornaments. Plus, we made over $750 for the library.

Congratulations to Cutressa Williams, who was the winner of our Learning Express gift basket.  And don't forget that Painted By U will bring the fired ornaments back to the library in 2 weeks and you can pick them up at the library.

Check out the pictures! Thanks to everyone who attended for supporting the Vestavia Hills Children's Library.

Update on Imagination Celebration and the Wine Tasting

Despite the rainy weather on May 19, 2009, Imagination Celebration was well attended. The festivities were moved inside the library making several planned actitivites unavailable, but nevertheless, the net profit from IC was $2621.40. The wine tasting and silent auction, held at the Wine Cellar the prior Thursday was a smashing success: its net profit was $3122. Together we raised $5743.40 for the Vestavia Hills Children's Library - PALS' best year so far. That money will go to pay for Summer Reading programs, new materials, and programs throughout the year. Thank you everyone, for your hard work and support! If you frequent a business that supported us in some way at IC or the Wine Tasting, please let them know you appreciate their support.
